Everything You Need to Know About Water Purification

Are you familiar with the game “Where’s my Water?” Perhaps, it is time to ask a new question, “What has my water gone through?”

Most types of drinking water have gone through the process of water purification. Here is everything you need to know about it:

What is it?

Water purification is the process of removing potentially harmful chemicals in the water. This process includes distillation, deionization, reverse osmosis, and carbon filtration. Contaminants such as parasites, bacteria, algae, viruses, and fungi are removed during the purification process.

Regular household use methods such as boiling water or using an activated carbon filter that removes water contaminants.

While the larger scale of water purification is a bit more complicated with their process:

  • PRETREATMENT

Most industrialized countries have pretreatment plants that remove biological contaminants and other materials from the water.

First, they screen the water to remove large debris such as sticks and or other materials. Screening is usually done to surface water or water that came from rivers and lakes.

Preconditioning is also done to make hard water achieve the consistency of soft water. Preconditioning ensures that hard water won’t leave mineral deposits behind, as that can clog pipes.

  • REFINEMENT

This procedure is done after pretreatment. Chemicals are added to add to the water that causes the small particles to clump together. The water is then mixed with large paddles so that coagulated particles will be brought together into a bigger clump that will slowly settle on the bottom of the tank or basin.

After removing all the settled particles, the water is then filtered to remove remaining suspended and unsettled particles.

  • DISINFECTION

This is the final step in water purification. During this procedure, harmful microbes, such as bacteria, viruses, and protozoa, are killed. Disinfection usually involves chorine, but other water treatment plants use ion exchange to remove metal ions or fluoridation to prevent tooth decay.

The treated water is then distributed to consumers through water distribution systems involving pipes, pumps, booster stations, storage tanks, and associated medium.
